Rebecca Walkers notes for her workshop: New Testament Woman : Rebecca looked at how the sociocultural backgrounds of women in the New Testament shaped their roles in the early church. She argued that there is no such thing as an “ideal New Testament woman” intended as a model for 21st century women.

JIM REIHER was trained and worked as a school teacher. He then became a lecturer at Tabor Theological College, then for 5 years worked for Urban Neighbour of Hope as their training coordinator. He now works for Access ministries as a regional support manager supporting 60 school chaplains.
REBECCA WALKER serves with the Salvation Army producing a variety of resources to support the ministry and mission of 520 ministers across Australia. She has a Bachelor of Theology from Tabor College.

Conference opening speaker. audio
General Eva Burrows became the world leader of The Salvation Army in 1986, only the second woman to hold that position. She served as General for seven years, administering the Salvation Army's religious and charitable work in 100 countries. Significant during this period was the re-establishment of The Salvation Army in Russia and other former communist countries. Over the years she has addressed meetings and preached in more than 70 countries.

Conference Dinner Speaker audio
Jessie Taylor is an outstanding young Australian. She is a distinguished honours graduate in Law and Arts who has travelled widely in Europe and South East Asia. She has a passion for social justice and is particularly concerned with the plight of refugees. She is chair, Law Institute of Victoria, Refugee Law Reform Committee, secretary, Liberty Victoria, chair the Working Group on Submission to Inquiry into Immigration Detention, a committee member of the Mazar Development Fund among other things. In 2008 she was chosen by Rotary as ‘The Young Achiever of the Year’. What is particularly significant is her hands-on involvement in the lives of refugees. For years she regularly visited refugees in detention centres in Australia seeking to help detainees. Last year she visited refugees in detention camps in Indonesia and she lives in a communal home that takes in young Afghan refugees. Jessie is actively involved in St Hilary’s Kew.

CBE International Conference 2010
In June 2010 we hosted the CBE International conference here in Victoria under the above title. The audio from the conference can be found on the Speakers page.
Our Keynote speakers included The Rev Dr Graham Cole, Professor of Biblical and Systematic Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Chicago, Dr. Cheryl Catford National Director, Australian Evangelical Alliance, Dr Oluwafunmilayo (Funmi) Para-Mallam, Senior Research Fellow at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Nigeria and the Rev Dr Kevin Giles, a pastor-theologian who has written widely on women in leadership, ministry in the apostolic age and the Trinity as model for mutually enriching relationships and church health.

In a timely article published in The Age newspaper, 15 July 2009, former President of the United States and prominent American Christian Jimmy Carter has declared his concern ‘that womenand girls have been discriminated against for too long in a twisted interpretation of the word of God’ . These very concerns will be addressed in the CBE International Conference to
be held in Melbourne 11-14 June 2010, Better Together: Christian perspectives on gender, ethnicity, justice and servant leadership. Read his article at The Age online
