WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR

MDG # 3 - Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women

  • Target 3a - Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education preferably by 2005 and to all levels of education no later than 2015

MDG # 5 - Improve Maternal Health

  • Target 5a - Reduce by three-quarters, between
    1990 and 2015, the maternal mortality ratio
  • Target 5b - achieve, by 2015, universal access to reproductive health

  • Political participation and decision making
    • Looks at parliamentary seats held
    • Legislators, senior officials and managers
    • Professional and technical positions

    • Year woman became presiding officer of Parliament
    • Women in ministerial positions
  • Economic participation and decision making
    • Businesses owned by women
  • Power over economic resources

CASE STUDY

POLITICAL PARTICIPATION - BRITISH ELECTION

  • 22 British Asian women stood as candidates
  • 6 women have won seats
  • 3 Asian Muslim women have won seats
  • New cabinet has 17% women
  • Campaign was about 3 men being interviewed by 3 men followed by 4 men negotiating the whole of British politics

  • Gendercide (The Economist)
  • All gender indices in 2009 show that gender inequality is still pervasive
  • Focusing on women and girls is the most effective way to fight global poverty and extremism (Kristof and Wudunn)
